The task assigned to Westwind is the removal of dykes in order to reconnect existing impoundments located adjacent to the Banana Creek and Mosquito Lagoon.

The St. Johns River Water Management District is working in partnership with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Aeronautics Space Administration has undertaken the rehabilitation and restoration of wetlands at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. Having completed 16,500 acres, the continuation of the project now calls for the removal of at least 12 miles of dyke in order to reconnect approximately 900 acres of impounded salt marsh.
