Believe it or not, South Florida has not always been the most human-friendly environment. Men have spent the past hundred years draining and altering the wetlands to accommodate the growing human population. Unfortunately, this created a dangerous ecological imbalance. The absence of natural wetlands not only altered the patterns of migratory birds and deprived wildlife of food and habitat, but also affected local climates and fresh water sources. The more we learn about how humans have impacted this fragile ecosystem, the more we need skilled teams to help fix the problem.
Westwind is proud to be a part of this important mission.
Our work includes both wetland restoration and wetland creation:
Restoration rehabilitates a degraded wetland or reestablishes a wetland that has been destroyed. This takes place on land that was, or still is, a wetland.
Creation is the construction of a wetland on a site that can support and sustain a new wetland environment. The creation of a new wetland is usually done to treat wastewater, storm water, acid mine drainage, or agricultural runoff.
